Alberta Conservation Information Management System (ACIMS) Non-Sensitive Element Occurrence (EO) data contains tracked non-sensitive EOs for Elements of conservation concern in Alberta. This file contains EO polygons mapped based on NatureServe Methodology. EOs are derived data products created based on observations received by ACIMS. ACIMS is the Alberta member of the international network of NatureServe Conservation Data Centers. The Government of Alberta is the owner of the EO data stored in the NatureServe Canada Biotics database. Vertebrate data is excluded from this dataset. Sensitive EOs, extirpated EOs, EOs with unconfirmed or questionable identifications, EOs with low precision and non-tracked EOs are all excluded from this dataset.

<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P STYLE="margin:0 0 7 0;"><SPAN>An Element Occurrence (EO) is an area of land and/or water in which a species or ecological community is, or was, present. </SPAN><SPAN>An Element is either a species (or subspecies taxa) or an ecological community, the Occurrence is the documented location. The EO concept is part of NatureServe methodology. This methodology is used throughout the NatureServe network. EOs are created based on the Element Occurrence Data Standard </SPAN><SPAN>and are a derived product </SPAN><SPAN>developed from submitted observations</SPAN><SPAN>. </SPAN><SPAN>An EO should have practical conservation value for the Element as evidenced by potential continued (or historical) presence and/or regular recurrence at a given location.</SPAN><SPAN> </SPAN><SPAN>For Species Elements, the EO often corresponds with the local population, but when appropriate may be a portion of a population (e.g., for long distance dispersers) or may be a group of nearby populations (e.g., metapopulation). For Ecological Community Elements, the EO may represent a stand or patch of a natural community, or a cluster of stands or patches of a natural community</SPAN><SPAN>. </SPAN><SPAN>This dataset contains Non-sensitive EOs. </SPAN><SPAN>Non-Sensitive EOs are locations (i.e. occurrences) of species or communities that are rare (or of conservation concern for some other reason) and for which there are no restrictions regarding public access to location data (beyond agreeing to the Terms and Conditions detailed below).</SPAN><SPAN> This data updates on a daily basis.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

ACIMS collects, processes and disseminates information on Elements of biological and physical diversity, including species and ecological communities. The work of ACIMS can be visualized as a cycle with 4 steps:
1. ACIMS lists Elements for Alberta, along with status ranks (see “General Status of Wild Species”).
2. ACIMS track and watch lists are updated based on current data – including provincial, national and global status ranks.
3. Data is collected for tracked Elements. This data is processed and mapped as Element Occurrences and distributed through ACIMS data products.
4. Elements listed for Alberta are reviewed and status ranks updated when required (return to step 1).
Keeping ACIMS data current involves processing and interpreting complex datasets covering over 20,000 Elements, spanning all forms of life documented in Alberta. The ACIMS database is continually growing as new Elements are identified in Alberta, or species names and classifications change. The results of a data search by ACIMS are not intended as a final statement on the presence, absence or condition of elements within a given area, or as a substitute for on-site surveys which may be required for environmental assessments. Many individuals and organizations have contributed data to the Alberta Conservation Information Management System (ACIMS). Many areas in Alberta have never been comprehensively surveyed.
