<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN STYLE="font-size:12pt">The Caw Ridge, Sulphur Ridge and Coal/Horn/Torrens Ridge (Conservation Area A) and the upper foothills, alpine and subalpine areas generally south of Sheep Creek and west of the Smoky River and Sulphur River (Conservation Area B) have been identified as areas that should be designated under the </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;font-size:12pt">Provincial Parks Act </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:12pt">in consideration of their conservation value. The area includes alpine and sub-alpine habitat that are key for a number of species at risk and important for traditional land-use. It outlines two areas known as the "nature-first"</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:12pt"> </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:12pt">zone of the Upper Smoky Plan and has been developed by Lands Planning, Environment and Protected Areas, Government of Alberta. Key outcomes for the development of the conservation areas are to enhance conservation opportunities in the sub-region, support traditional land uses, maintain wilderness landscapes and low-impact backcountry activities, and enhance opportunities for nature-based recreation and tourism. </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:12pt">The </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-size:12pt">Upper Smoky Sub-Regional Plan was published November 2025. The parks and provincial recreation areas were sourced from the provincial parks and protected areas dataset, clipped within the Upper Smoky boundary. </SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
This dataset is designed to support the implementation of the Upper Smoky Sub-Regional Plan. The Nature-First zone of the plan are two areas of high conservation value identified. Conservation Area A and Conservation area B make up the "nature-first" zone. Parks and provincial recreation areas (PRA) contained within the Upper Smoky area were also implemented within this dataset.

This data was created during the Upper Smoky sub-regional planning process using data derived from Government of Alberta’s layer manager, and from information derived from engagement and the sub regional planning process. Boundaries from recreation and parks were included and used to inform this dataset. This layer was also developed with feedback from ongoing community engagement of policy makers, industry, First Nation and Metis communities. This layer will be used in the sub regional planning process for Upper Smoky and for use in the ce-dst.
