The Greater Short-horned Lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi), previously called the Eastern Short-horned Lizard (Phrynosoma douglassii brevirostre), is designated as an Endangered species in Alberta (under Alberta's Wildlife Act). The Greater Short-horned Lizard Range dataset replaces the former Eastern Short-horned Lizard Range dataset. A smoothed minimum convex polygon (MCP) was used to delineate a range based on observations from relevant databases in Alberta. Additional considerations were used to further filter range boundaries after observation data were plotted. Historical/extirpated observations were removed; bio- and geophysical restrictions to species patterns (e.g., rivers, elevation, ecoregions) were used to refine ranges as appropriate, and species experts reviewed maps and provided additional insight. Habitat Suitability Indices and Resource Selection Functions and inclusion of the Greater Short-horned Lizard Habitat layer further refined the boundary. Once an MCP was adequately modified, its border was smoothed. Greater Short-horned Lizard range was based upon 10 years of FWMIS observation \n\nGreater Short-horned Lizard Habitat\nThe Greater Short-horned Lizard Habitat dataset was developed for landuse planning in the Landscape Analysis Tool (LAT). This dataset will provide industrial operators and government departments information regarding the location of sensitive habitat for the greater short-horned lizard that must be avoided.\nPolygons were delineated based on observations from relevant databases in Alberta and suitable habitat (i.e., coulees, bearpaw shale dunes) with a 200m setback from the edge, as per the approved setback. Habitat Suitability Indices, Resource Selection Functions, and Ortho imagery were also consulted. Insufficient survey work has been conducted to know the precise extent of species movements but areas are inferred from observational records, telemetry studies and surveys results. The Sensitive Snake Habitat dataset provides land users/disposition holders and government departments with information to prevent contravention of the Act by requiring mitigation to prevent snake mortality (in particular mortality caused by vehicles and heavy equipment) by human activities. \n\nThe Sensitive Snake Habitat dataset includes Townships where sensitive snake species (e.g. prairie rattlesnake, bull snake, and garter snake) activity is known to occur. Insufficient survey work has been conducted to know the precise extent of species movements but areas are inferred from observational records, telemetry studies and survey\u2019s results. Observations were compiled from the Government of Alberta\u2019s Fisheries and Wildlife Management Information System (FWMIS) which includes data from provincial surveys conducted by regional wildlife biologists and independent researchers. Sensitive Amphibians Ranges was based upon the combination of Plains Spadefoot (Spea bombifrons) Range with Great Plains Toad (Bufo cognatus) Range. Plains Spadefoot Range encompassed both ranges, and is described here. A smoothed detailed convex polygon was used to delineate a range based on observations from relevant databases in Alberta. Additional considerations were used to further filter range boundaries after observation data were plotted. Historical/extirpated observations were removed; bio- and geophysical restrictions to species patterns (e.g., rivers, elevation, ecoregions) were used to refine ranges as appropriate, and species experts reviewed maps and provided additional insight.
