Road point features are captured from imagery or from supplied supplemental data, which represent the location or centre of the feature. Topology rules have been applied and validated to ensure point locations coincide with the relevant road arc in any of these features.
All points visible in the imagery or supplied in the supplemental data are digitized, classified, and integrated within the provincial boundary of Alberta.
Attribute information is populated at time of data collection and is reviewed by Government of Alberta staff to ensure the attribution correctly reflects the details in the imagery used for collection.
It is acknowledged that the positional accuracy of the data is dependent on the inherent accuracy and resolution of the imagery used, sufficient care and control of procedures used for feature interpretation and digitizing have been used to attain the "Positional Accuracy" identified below. All features visible in the imagery and listed in the specifications have been digitized, classified, and integrated.

Initially captured on paper maps as part of the Base Features 1:20,000 program in the early 1980s, this data has been digitized and first became accessible as a digital product starting in 1998.
Specifications for capture of features outlined below.
Ferry Crossing Event / Ford-Winter Crossing Event:
- Through on screen digitizing, a point is captured at the centre of the crossing length and intersection of the centreline of the hydrographic feature at the crossing location.
Roadway Tunnel Event:
- Through on screen digitizing, a point is captured at the centre of the tunnel length and in the middle of the road coinciding along the participating road arc feature.
Miscellaneous Control Device Event / Bridge Event / Overpass-Underpass Event:
- Through on screen digitizing, a point is captured at the centre or exact location of the event coinciding along the participating road arc feature.
SPOT is a commercial high-resolution optical imaging Earth observation satellite system operating from space.

The National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) comprises digital vector data sets that cover the entire Canadian landmass. The NTDB includes features such as watercourses, urban areas, railways, roads, vegetation, and relief. The organizational unit for the NTDB is the National Topographic System (NTS), based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). Each file (data set) consists of one NTS unit at either the 1:50,000 or 1:250,000 scale. This is a legacy product and no longer used in Access Update program.
