Besides name, each Municipal District has a numeric identifier (i.e. 0506 for Big Lakes, M.D. of) designated by Alberta Municipal Affairs documented in the Municipal Codes. The Municipal Codes document also contains the number of Alberta municipalities by type (i.e. City, Improvement District, etc.). Altalis Ltd. is the designated agent of Alberta Data Partnerships Ltd. (ADP) who provides the monthly update of the Rural shape file to Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, if there are changes commencing Nov. 2005.
