Service Description: Alberta Fire Status - Wildfire Locations and Perimeters service includes the points and polygons representing active, turned over, assistance ended and extinguished wildfire locations and perimeters, and points representing municipal active, inactive and extinguished wildfires. They include wildfires that started within the Forest Protection Area (FPA) where Alberta Wildfire has jurisdiction, mutual aid wildfires that started outside of the FPA where Alberta Wildfire provided assistance, and point locations for municipal wildfires. An active wildfire is any wildfire that is currently out of control, being held or under control and any mutual aid wildfire where assistance has been started as well as active municipal wildfires. The terms fire and wildfire are used interchangeably. This service consists of three layers, including one point layer for Alberta Wildfire Locations, one point layer for Alberta Municipal Wildfire Locations, and one polygon layer for Alberta Wildfire Perimeters, which makes this service the best option for collecting statistics on the current wildfire situation. The "Alberta Fire Status by Category Group - Wildfire Locations and Perimeters" (alberta_fire_status_by_category_group) service, is the best option for mapping purposes, as the data are grouped into separate categories. The Fire Type referred to as "Wildfire" in the data are wildfires that started within the FPA where Alberta Wildfire has jurisdiction. The Fire Type referred to as "Mutual Aid" in the data are wildfires that started outside of the FPA, or within an urban municipality within the FPA, where Alberta Wildfire provided assistance. The Assessment Assistance Date refers to the initial assessment date of a "Wildfire" or the assistance date of a "Mutual Aid" wildfire.Carryover wildfires include both Fire Types that are active, extinguished, turned over or for which assistance ended on or after January 1. A carryover wildfire is distinguished by the label on the wildfire point location, designed using the Carryover Flag. A carryover fire label will include the year in addition to the fire number, whereas current-year wildfires only show the fire number. The Fire Type used in combination with the Fire Status include the following unique values that are used to create the wildfire layers:Out of Control (OC): The Fire Type is "Wildfire". The wildfire is burning and is expected to continue growing.Being Held (BH): The Fire Type is "Wildfire". Given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past existing boundaries.Under Control (UC): The Fire Type is "Wildfire". The wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread.Mutual Aid - Assistance Started (AS): The Fire Type is "Mutual Aid". The wildfire is outside the jurisdiction of Alberta Wildfire and has not burned into the FPA, and assistance is being provided to the lead agency.Mutual Aid - Out of Control (OC): The Fire Type is "Mutual Aid". The wildfire started outside the jurisdiction of Alberta Wildfire and has burned into the FPA where Alberta Wildfire becomes the lead agency. The wildfire is burning and is expected to continue growing.Mutual Aid - Being Held (BH): The Fire Type is "Mutual Aid". The wildfire started outside the jurisdiction of Alberta Wildfire and has burned into the FPA where Alberta Wildfire becomes the lead agency. Given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past existing boundaries.Mutual Aid - Under Control (UC): The Fire Type is "Mutual Aid". The wildfire started outside the jurisdiction of Alberta Wildfire and has burned into the FPA where Alberta Wildfire becomes the lead agency. The wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread.Turned Over (TO): The Fire Type is "Wildfire". The wildfire is within the Forest Protection Area and Alberta Wildfire turns over the responsibility for extinguishment of the wildfire to another agency or individual. There are no wildfire perimeters captured for Turned Over wildfires.Mutual Aid - Assistance Ended (AE): The Fire Type is "Mutual Aid". The wildfire is outside the jurisdiction of Alberta Wildfire and did not burn into the FPA. Assistance was required by the lead agency, but assistance is no longer required, or Alberta Wildfire transitioned command back to the responsible agency before the wildfire was extinguished.Extinguished (EX): The Fire Type is "Wildfire". The wildfire has been put out and is no longer burning.Mutual Aid - Extinguished (EX): The Fire Type is "Mutual Aid". The wildfire started outside the jurisdiction of Alberta Wildfire and has burned into the FPA where Alberta Wildfire becomes the lead agency. The wildfire has been put out and is no longer burning, or Alberta Wildfire resources are no longer working on the incident. The Alberta Wildfire Locations layer shows the points for all current-year wildfires and wildfires from previous years that were still active on January 1 of this year (carryover wildfires). The symbology used in the Alberta Wildfire Locations layer are flames. The Fire Type "Wildfire" are flames colour coded by Fire Status. The Fire Type "Mutual Aid" are purple flames inside a circle colour coded by Fire Status. Assistance started is a purple flame only, as a status has not been assigned. The Alberta Wildfire Locations layer includes all of the unique values from the list above, which makes this layer ideal for collecting an array of statistics, including type, status, date and more. Multiple combinations can be used to refine the statistics. The Alberta Municipal Wildfire Locations represents point locations of wildfires reported by municipalities to the Government of Alberta, Forestry and Parks. Each feature includes a fire incident status attribute indicating whether the wildfire is active, inactive (not spreading), or extinguished (completely out). The symbology used in the Municipal Wildfire Locations layer are blue flames inside a circle colour coded by fire incident status. The active and inactive municipal wildfires may include carryover wildfires from the previous year, while the extinguished municipal wildfires will only include current year wildfires. There are no wildfire perimeters for municipal wildfires. The Alberta Wildfire Perimeters layer shows the polygons for all the wildfires that have been captured that are active in this current year, including the carryover wildfires. They also show all the captured wildfires for this current year only for the Mutual Aid - Assistance Ended, Extinguished, and Mutual Aid - Extinguished. Turned Over wildfires are not included. The symbology used in the Alberta Wildfire Perimeters layer are colour coded by Fire Status only. Please refer to the "Historical Wildfires Data" (historical_wildfires_data) service for the assistance ended mutual aid and extinguished carryover wildfire perimeters.
