Description:

The Fire Control Orders Polygon contains the fire control orders types, which aim to provide information on active fire advisories, fire restrictions, fire bans and forest area closures across Alberta. The map service consists of six (6) symbolization layers whose symbolization is controlled with a range of view-optimized scales starting at 1:27,733,946. The labels are controlled through a label manager consisting of eleven (11) label classes whose label symbology is controlled with a range of view-optimized scales starting at 1:6,933,486. Supported by participating community members, fire chiefs and municipality administrators are able to post their alerts to the site so the most current and reliable information is always available to the public. Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the information presented on this site. However, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry does not take responsibility for outdated or incorrect information. This includes the accuracy of boundaries on the website, Alberta Fire Bans. Every individual is responsible for knowing and following the legislation and bylaws of the area they are in at a given time. While all municipalities and jurisdictions across Alberta are encouraged to participate, AlbertaFireBans.ca is a community site and participation is optional. If you do not see any information for your municipality, feel free to contact them directly to confirm whether it is a participating community. Every municipality in Alberta will have slightly different legislation or bylaws concerning these alerts. Alerts and updates are managed by participating municipalities. Each municipality is responsible for posting their own alerts and updates. It is important to read the details of each alert carefully and contact your local municipality if you have any questions or concerns. If you have questions about a jurisdiction’s boundaries, please contact that municipality. Alerts within provincial parks and recreation areas are the responsibility of the Ministry of Alberta Environment and Parks as they are a separate entity. Please visit the Alberta Environment and Parks fire ban website where you can find information on any alerts within their jurisdiction. Alberta’s Wildfire Management Branch is currently working with Alberta Parks to integrate their postings into this map service. There are currently four levels of alerts used in this map service, their layer orders displayed in order of severity, with the first being the most severe to the lowest severity: 1) Forest Area Closure When put in place, this alert signifies that portions of the forest are closed due to safety concerns, and no public access will be permitted. These alerts are mandated through the provincial government, and will only be in place during extreme conditions. 2) Fire Ban A fire ban is usually put in place when a municipality has taken steps to restrict or prohibit most or all types of fire use within that area. It is important to read the details of the fire ban very closely, as they can vary from place to place. 3) Fire Restriction This level acts as a higher level of warning before a fire ban. Certain types of burning will be restricted, while certain types will be allowed. It is important to read the details of the fire restriction, as they will vary from municipality to municipality. 4) Fire Advisory This level is meant to inform the public that the fire hazard rating has increased and there may be certain restrictions on burning. It may also be used as a warning that a more restrictive alert may be coming if the situation does not improve, or for short-term concerns like major wind events. DATA USE LIMITATIONS Your use of the information will be governed by the terms of the Open Government Licence - Alberta, in force as of the date you accessed the information. Each municipality is responsible for their data and should you require the data, please contact the municipality in question. Contact information can be found on the Alberta Fire Bans website under the Contact link.
