Sensitive Snake Hibernacula Range
Snake hibernacula are protected from disruption or destruction year-round under the Alberta Wildlife Act, therefore surveys for hibernacula must be conducted prior to landuse activities to prevent contravention of the Act. The Sensitive Snake Hibernacula Range provides land users/disposition holders and government departments with information regarding the habitat where snake hibernacula are expected to occur in southern Alberta for the purpose of pre-development wildlife surveys. Specific operating conditions apply based on the results of the survey.
This dataset (formerly known as the Sensitive Snake Species Range) is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. The Sensitive Snake Hibernacula Range was delineated for prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis), bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer), western hognose snake (Heterodon nasicus) and eastern yellow-bellied racer (Coluber constrictor). A minimum convex polygon (MCP) was used to delineate a range based on observation records from Alberta's Fish and Wildlife Information Management System (FWMIS) and known snake hibernacula within Alberta. Additional considerations were used to further filter range boundaries after observation data were plotted. Habitat Suitability Indices of prairie rattlesnake was combined to identify suitable hibernacula sites with the species ranges. Bio- and geophysical restrictions to species patterns (e.g., rivers, elevation, ecoregions) were used to refine ranges as appropriate. Once an MCP was adequately modified, its border was smoothed. In 2020, the Sensitive Snake Species Range layer name was changed to the Sensitive Snake Hibernaculum Range and included new information and areas.

Sensitive Snake Habitat
All species of snake in Alberta are designated as sensitive and are protected from killing/harm/harassment under the Alberta Wildlife Act. The Sensitive Snake Habitat dataset provides land users/disposition holders and government departments with information to prevent contravention of the Act by requiring mitigation to prevent snake mortality (in particular mortality caused by vehicles and heavy equipment) by human activities. The Sensitive Snake Habitat dataset includes Townships where sensitive snake species (e.g., prairie rattlesnake, bull snake, and garter snake) activity is known to occur. Insufficient survey work has been conducted to know the precise extent of species movements but areas are inferred from observational records, telemetry studies and surveys results. Observations were compiled from the Government of Alberta’s Fisheries and Wildlife Management Information System (FWMIS) which includes data from provincial surveys conducted by regional wildlife biologists and independent researchers. The ATS Version 4.1 Township index polygons were used and are derived from all township polygons in the province of Alberta, compiled from the Master Alberta Township System coordinate file (MATS) published March 31, 2005.Land use activities have a high potential to result in the death of individuals and destruction of their habitat and landuse guidelines that consider the sensitive nature of these species’ and inform the use of restricted areas and periods assist with the recovery of sensitive snake species and prevent degradation of species population status.
