Layer: Trumpeter Swan Watercourse (ID: 39)

Parent Layer: Trumpeter Swan

Name: Trumpeter Swan Watercourse

Display Field: NAME

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This layer represents the Trumpeter Swan Watercourse which provides the general public, industrial operators and government departments with information regarding the location of Trumpeter Swan waterbodies. Specific operating conditions apply to these zones. Land-use guidelines stipulate timing and setback conditions for all identified breeding locations. This layer is not visible beyond the scale of 1:6,933,486. This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. Trumpeter Swans (Cygnus buccinator) are sensitive to human disturbance, and human activity in breeding areas may cause abandonment, or decrease survival of eggs or cygnets. Trumpeter Swans are listed as a Threatened species under Alberta's Wildlife Act, and as such are afforded protection against hunting and the destruction of nests. This swan buffer layer includes all water bodies as of March 31, 2015 with confirmed breeding swan pairs (i.e., active nests or cygnets) as determined by swan surveys and incidental observations. The entire water body is considered a nesting site and was buffered by 500m and 800m to indicate the variable timing window setback options. Buffers are expressed as a computed 10 TM value. Sites not associated with waterbodies (lotic systems, unmapped wetlands, beaver ponds) were indicated by circular polygons (5m radius) and buffered by 500m and 800m. Accuracy of hydro layers is limiting, and it is recommended that all proponents measure setback distances from the high-water mark.
