This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) zone delineations are based upon agreed upon grizzly bear core and secondary grizzly bear watershed units determined by Alberta Environment and Parks, and the Boreal Grizzly bear range of the Chinchaga area. Grizzly bear watershed units are characterised as being either Core or Secondary grizzly bear habitat. Core Areas are areas of high habitat value (Resource Selection Function) and generally low mortality risk currently measured through Open Route Densities. Secondary Areas are areas of good habitat, reflecting the broader range of grizzly bears. All Core and Secondary areas within a grizzly bear population unit were merged producing Core and Secondary population units. The Boreal Grizzly Bear Range in the Chinchaga region was calculated using a variety of information sources, including location data from a variety of sources (FWMIS observation points, telemetry, and mortality data) and local knowledge of staff familiar with this area. The area encompassed is Crown land that contains the Clear Hills and Whitemud Hills, the Fontas Hills, the Naylor Hills and the Hawk Hills and is drained by the Notikewin and Doig Rivers and their tributaries in the south, the Hotchkiss, Meikle, Botha, Goffit and Keg Rivers and their tributaries in the central and northeastern portions, and the Chinchaga and Fontas Rivers to the north and northwest. This area will be currently classed as an unofficial Secondary area.
Grizzly bear security is related to human-caused mortality. This information is provided for the general public, industrial operators and government departments information regarding the location of Grizzly bear zones. Specific operating conditions apply to this zone to reduce bear human conflicts and bear mortality.
