Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are a threatened species in Alberta. Land-use activities can directly and indirectly contribute to disturbance of caribou and degradation of their habitat, decreasing the effectiveness and likelihood of caribou recovery in Alberta. Caribou Range - Zone A provides the general public, industrial operators and government departments with information on areas within caribou range where land-use activities could pose a higher risk to caribou populations. This dataset delineates areas within caribou range, where specified land-use conditions apply in order to enable species conservation and recovery in conjunction with federal and provincial recovery plans and strategies, while still accommodating land-use activities. This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. Caribou Range - Zone A represents areas within Caribou Range where land-use activities could pose a higher risk to caribou populations. These areas were delineated using location data collected from radio-collared caribou from 1980 - 2019. Data Use limitations The Wildlife Sensitivity data is available free of a charge as a service to Albertans. These wildlife feature layers provide industrial operators, government departments and the general public with the best information currently available on the extent of wildlife sensitivities. A few items should be highlighted on the issue of data usage. Wildlife Management of Alberta Environment and Parks, Government of Alberta asks that any liability for any misuse or misinterpretation of the data, should the data be inappropriately mapped, is the responsibility of the user. Additionally it is the user's responsibility to ensure that the most up-to date and correct data is used. Alberta Environment and Parks reserves the right to update and change the Wildlife Sensitivity data. Finally, while all users are free to download and use the Wildlife Sensitivity data for information and planning uses (e.g., reports to clients), we ask that digital and hard copy maps (other than those used for client reports) are not be distributed for commercial purposes.
