snippet: FWMIS Simplified Hydrology Arcs is used to identify a spatial representation of streams and rivers within the province of Alberta, and is not to be confused with the Base Features Derived Simplified Line Network (BFD SLNet), Strahler Ordered Hydrography. FWMIS Simplified Hydrology Arcs is a generalized representation of the FWMIS Hydrology Arcs feature class. This layer contains ‘dissolved’ stream arcs based on Waterbody ID, which effectively merged stream arcs together with the same Waterbody ID. This layer provides Government of Alberta staff and external clients of Fish and Wildlife fish species presence (current and historic), Fish and Wildlife Management Information System (FWMIS) Waterbody ID, and Strahler Stream Order information. FWMIS Waterbody ID's is unique values assigned to waterbodies with fish or fish habitat survey information (both current and historic). FWMIS Simplified Hydrology Arcs does not contain all streams and rivers with fish survey information, as there are many 'unmapped' bodies of water within the province of Alberta. FWMIS is the ultimate holder of all fisheries inventory data, and should be consulted as the sole source of base fisheries and wildlife inventory data. FWMIS Simplified Hydrology Arcs provides a broad representation of what fish species could potentially occur in reaches/sections of that particular waterbody, and it does not represent species absence. Strahler Stream Order value was calculated using the stream/rivers LARGEST ORDER numeric value. Species Presence updated bi-annually, or as new data becomes available. See below for more information on 'Use Limitations'. Please see the metadata for FWMIS Hydrology Arcs for more information on these derived layers. Update: - Waterbody names are now provided in 2 separate fields; Official Name, and Common Name as of July 2023 - Species Presence as of April 2026

description:

FWMIS Simplified Hydrology Arcs is a derived layer from the FWMIS Hydrology Arcs feature class, which in turn is a derived layer from the BFD SLNet Hydrography. FWMIS Simplified Hydrology Arcs has been modified for Fish and Wildlife business purposes, where spatial adjustments and field attributes have been added or removed as required. Modifications include, but are not limited to, the addition of a 'Species Presence' field, edits to spatial and non-spatial components, removal of topological error, and annual maintenance as required. 'Species Presence' is updated quarterly (approximate) or as new information becomes available.

Base Features Derived Simplified Line Network (BFD SLNet):

The BFD SLNet base is a simplification of the Base Features Single Line Network (BF SLNet) which involved removing or manipulating all features that do not form simple geographic connections. Due to the simplification process that was applied to the BF SLNet, the BFD SLNet contains fewer streams than the BF SLNet and no streams that have been split on characteristics other than confluences. The simplification process removed approximately 30% to 40% of the arcs present in the BF SLNet. For problematic flows, such as secondary flows, the arcs are deleted. Unsplitting does not remove the linework but multiple arcs are now identified as only one arc. All problematic features in the BF SLNet are removed from this dataset to facilitate the assignment of Strahler Order. The BFD SLNet contains no artificially bisected streams, braided or cross-connecting secondary flows or circular flows, which are often associated with drainage ditches.

Official BF SLNet Metadata Document: https://geodiscover.alberta.ca/geoportal/catalog/search/resource/fullMetadata.page?uuid=%7B7F9C0F33-6DDB-4479-B2D9-1419D79E2D26%7D

Official FWMIS Fisheries and Wildlife Inventory Data: http://aep.alberta.ca/fish-wildlife/fwmis/access-fwmis-data.aspx
