Description: This layer represents the Caribou Range - Zone A Local Name label and is not visible beyond the scale of 1:3,466,742.
Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are a threatened species in Alberta. Land-use activities can directly and indirectly contribute to disturbance of caribou and degradation of their habitat, decreasing the effectiveness and likelihood of caribou recovery in Alberta. Caribou Range - Zone A provides the general public, industrial operators and government departments with information on areas within caribou range where land-use activities could pose a higher risk to caribou populations. This dataset delineates areas within caribou range, where specified land-use conditions apply in order to enable species conservation and recovery in conjunction with federal and provincial recovery plans and strategies, while still accommodating land-use activities. This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. Caribou Range - Zone A represents areas within Caribou Range where land-use activities could pose a higher risk to caribou populations. These areas were delineated using location data collected from radio-collared caribou from 1980 - 2019.

Name: Caribou Range Sub-Unit - West Side Athabasca
Display Field: SUBUNIT
Type: Feature Layer
Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon
Description: This group of layers represents the information regarding the fill area with a boundary outline of the West Side Athabasca Caribou Range Sub-Unit.
Description: This layer represents the Caribou Range Area outline which provides provides the general public, industrial operators and government departments information regarding the location of caribou ranges. Specific operating conditions apply to caribou ranges.
This layer is not visible beyond the scale of 1:27,733,946.
This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. This dataset is comprised of the provincial Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) Range distribution data. The boundaries are derived upon the known ranges of Caribou herds, as determined through historical information, the movements of collared animals (telemetry) and aerial surveys. This new map has been used to communicate the extent of caribou range in the province for important initiatives such as the Alberta cabinet approved Woodland Caribou Policy for Alberta, and the Federal Recovery Strategy for both boreal and southern mountain woodland caribou. This caribou range map will be adopted as the land-use referral map for all land-use applications on April 1, 2013. Beginning April 1, 2013 projects that have received an EPEA approval using the updated Caribou Range map, and all other land use and forestry applications, will use the updated Caribou Range map for required disposition applications.
Data Use Limitations
The Wildlife Sensitivity data is available free of a charge as a service to Albertans. These wildlife feature layers provide industrial operators, government departments and the general public with the best information currently available on the extent of wildlife sensitivities. A few items should be highlighted on the issue of data usage. Wildlife Management of Alberta Environment and Parks, Government of Alberta asks that any liability for any misuse or misinterpretation of the data, should the data be inappropriately mapped, is the responsibility of the user. Additionally it is the user's responsibility to ensure that the most up-to date and correct data is used. Alberta Environment and Parks reserves the right to update and change the Wildlife Sensitivity data. Finally, while all users are free to download and use the Wildlife Sensitivity data for information and planning uses (e.g., reports to clients), we ask that digital and hard copy maps (other than those used for client reports) are not be distributed for commercial purposes.

This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) zone delineations are based upon agreed upon grizzly bear core and secondary grizzly bear watershed units determined by Alberta Environment and Parks, and the Boreal Grizzly bear range of the Chinchaga area. Grizzly bear watershed units are characterised as being either Core or Secondary grizzly bear habitat. Core Areas are areas of high habitat value (Resource Selection Function) and generally low mortality risk currently measured through Open Route Densities. Secondary Areas are areas of good habitat, reflecting the broader range of grizzly bears. All Core and Secondary areas within a grizzly bear population unit were merged producing Core and Secondary population units. The Boreal Grizzly Bear Range in the Chinchaga region was calculated using a variety of information sources, including location data from a variety of sources (FWMIS observation points, telemetry, and mortality data) and local knowledge of staff familiar with this area. The area encompassed is Crown land that contains the Clear Hills and Whitemud Hills, the Fontas Hills, the Naylor Hills and the Hawk Hills and is drained by the Notikewin and Doig Rivers and their tributaries in the south, the Hotchkiss, Meikle, Botha, Goffit and Keg Rivers and their tributaries in the central and northeastern portions, and the Chinchaga and Fontas Rivers to the north and northwest. This area will be currently classed as an unofficial Secondary area.
Grizzly bear security is related to human-caused mortality. This information is provided for the general public, industrial operators and government departments information regarding the location of Grizzly bear zones. Specific operating conditions apply to this zone to reduce bear human conflicts and bear mortality.

Ord's Kangaroo Rat Habitat
This dataset will provide industrial operators and government departments information regarding the location of sensitive habitat for Ord’s kangaroo rat that must be avoided.
This dataset contains Ord’s kangaroo rat habitat that must be avoided by land use activities. Polygons were delineated based on observations from relevant databases in Alberta and suitable habitat (i.e., sand dunes) with a 250m setback from observations, as per the approved setback. Once a polygon was modified, its border was smoothed.

Ord's Kangaroo Rat Range
This dataset is produced to provide industrial operators and government departments information regarding the location of Ord's Kangaroo Rat Range for the application of appropriate wildlife surveys. Specific operating conditions may apply upon the results of wildlife surveys.
This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. A smoothed minimum convex polygon (MCP) was used to delineate a range based on observations from relevant databases in Alberta. Additional considerations were used to further filter range boundaries after observation data were plotted. Historical/extirpated observations were removed; bio- and geophysical restrictions to species patterns (e.g., rivers, elevation, ecoregions) were used to refine ranges as appropriate, and species experts reviewed maps and provided additional insight. Once an MCP was adequately modified, its border was smoothed. Ord's Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys ordii) Range was based upon recent observation data records from 2005, to maintain consistency of survey methodology.

Description: This layer represents the Ords Kangaroo Rat Range boundary area fill with an outline.
The layer is not visible beyond the scale of 1:27,733,946.
